Death is a topic we frequently think about, but infrequently discuss. To cite a familiar quote by Benjamin Franklin, “Certainty? In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes. ” And isn’t that the truth. Year after year, people spend countless hours preparing their tax returns. Tax returns are a major deal and you want to be sure you have filled them out properly. In the face of certainty it is essential to be prepared.
What about death? Death is absolutely certain (unless of course there are immortals among us, or scientists working on anti-aging technologies actually succeed in making humans live forever). Benjamin Franklin placed Death and Taxes on an equal playing field, but in reality death is even more of a certainty because one could always run off somewhere and hide from the tax collectors.
It took two paragraphs to get to the bottom line, but my point is that since it is certain we are all going to die, we really need to take the time to be realistic about it and discuss it. We need to think about what will happen when we die. Once we depart this earthly life, who will take over our responsibilities? Who will take care of our pets? How can we be sure the bills are paid on time? What if we would like to leave special messages to our family and friends?
I do not mean to try and scare anyone, but death is a part of living and it can happen at any time. Of course, you are much less likely to die if you are young, but in any case its always good policy to make sure will not leave behind a mountain of loose ends.
Out of that somewhat rambling 1AM post you probably get the idea behind YouDeparted.com. We are starting this site and service so that you have a place to keep track of everything important to leave behind to friends and loved ones in the event that you pass away.
In the coming weeks we are going to work at a furious pace to get this valuable service up and running and although I do not expect anyone to check out this blog now, if you do happen to come across it, we would love to hear from you!
From beautiful Lake Tahoe,
Nick of YouDeparted.com
