Unlocking Examples

See the Unlocking Your Account guide for screenshots and further help.

Here are three example unlocking situations:

  1. Example 1
John Smith has set up one Recipient, Mary One. The account has no Time Delay. John has specified only one Recipient needs to log in to verify his passing. John passes away.
Mary One logs in. Upon her successful login, the account is unlocked, the emails and Letters are sent and she can now view the information left for her in the account. She will only be able to view the entries where her name is attached as a Recipient. If John had written four emails to friends, but had not attached Mary One's name to them, she would not be able to view the emails sent.

  2. Example 2
John Smith has set up one Recipient, Mary One. The account has a 5 day time delay. John has specified only one Recipient needs to log in to verify his passing. John passes away.

    i) Mary One logs in. Upon her successful login, she receives the message, "The account of John Smith has a Time Delay of 5 days."

ii) Mary logs in 5 days later. The account is unlocked and the emails are sent, the Letters are mailed and she can now view the information.

  3. Example 3
John Smith has set up four Recipients for his account. We will call these Recipients Mary One, Bill Two, Alfred Three and Josee Four. The account has a 3 day time delay. John has specified at least three Recipients must log in to verify his passing. John passes away.

    i) Mary One logs in.
Upon her successful login, all the other Recipients are notified via email.
Note: An email is sent to the email address of John Smith in case for some reason Mary One or the other Recipients have tried to unlock the account while John Smith is still alive. This is the primary reason to have a Time Delay. If John Smith were in fact still alive, he could relock the account and choose new, more trustworthy, Recipients.

ii) Bill Two now logs in.
He receives the message "Not enough Recipients have logged in to unlock the account."

iii) Josee Four now logs in.
She receives the message "The account of John Smith has a Time Delay of 3 days." The reason Josee Four receives this message is because she is the third Recipient to log in and has satisfied the minimum number of Recipients to verify the passing of John Smith.
The Recipients will now have to wait for 3 days for the information to be made available.

iv) Mary One logs in again 3 days later.
The Time Delay has been satisfied and the account is now unlocked. After Mary One logs in (or if any of the Recipients log in again after 3 days), this is when the emails are sent, any letters sent to the mail processor and the information for each Recipient is made available.

    v) Mary One can only see the entries John Smith left for her. The same with Bill, Alfred and Josee. When you make entries, you will have a list of the Recipients in the lower right hand corner. Each entry can have one or more Recipients and only those Recipients attached to the entry will be able to view the information.
